- Chronic Homelessness Down in Sacramento County
- Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance conducts a homeless street count biennially in accordance with HUD funding requirements for homeless programs. The count was conducted on Tuesday, January 27, 2009. The final report results demonstrate that the 10 Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness is successfully helping many of the chronically homeless people in Sacramento County obtain housing. While the overall number of homeless has increased 14 percent from 2007 to 2009, the number of chronically homeless decreased 34.8 percent during this same period.

- Sacramento County Makes Changes to Medically Indigent Services Program (CMISP)
- Effective April 1, 2009 individuals requesting medical services through the County Medically Indigent Services Program (CMISP) must now provide documentation proving United States citizenship or legal immigration status.

- A “point in time” count of unsheltered homeless persons will be conducted by the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance (DHA) along with other government, law enforcement, and community agencies in the evening hours of Tuesday, January 27, 2009.

- Winter Shelter for Homeless Opens at Cal Expo
- The Winter Shelter, located at Cal Expo, operated by Volunteers of America and funded by the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance (DHA), will open Monday, November 24, 2008. Able to house as many as 154 men, women and children each night throughout Sacramento's cold and wet winter months, it will remain open through late March 2009.

- The Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is participating in ServiceNation's "Day of Action" events on September 27, 2008 by holding a Neighborhood Emergency Training (NET) class taught by volunteers to volunteers. ServiceNation is a national campaign to inspire a new era of citizen service in America.

- Sacramento County's Meals on Wheels Program Helps San Joaquin County Feed Senior Residents
- Sacramento County's Meals on Wheels Program is providing 9,500 meals to San Joaquin County to help feed resident seniors. San Joaquin County is taking over the responsibility from Seniors First, a nonprofit that is struggling from rising costs and sagging contributions and has been serving meals to resident seniors for more than 25 years.

- Homeless to be Counted in Sacramento County
- As a condition of receiving Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding, counties are required to conduct a "point in time" count of homeless individuals every two years during the last seven days of January. DHA, the major grantee for these funds, receives approximately $13.5 million annually to use to contract with numerous community agencies to provide housing and services for formerly homeless persons.
