1. What is CalWIN?

CalWIN, CalWORKs Information Network, is a state mandated information system to automate welfare eligibility for CalWORKs, Food Stamps, Medi-Cal, CAPI, GA, and Foster Care programs. It will replace outdated software, allow us to increase our productivity and improve our public service.

2. How will it affect clients?

  1. CalWIN will provide more accurately calculated benefits.
  2. Clients will have fewer forms to fill out for interviews.
  3. Clients will be better served by the department staff.
  4. Initially, there is a possibility of longer lobby lines, longer wait times to see a worker, or to get a callback from a worker.

3. Are clients’ benefits going to change?

Benefits may change due to the improved accuracy of the new system.

4. Why are interviews taking longer?

  1. Since the department has gone to a new computer system, staff is getting used to the system. Time is needed in the interview to gather the information that applicants usually entered on a form.
  2. It may take awhile for staff to become familiar with the system.
  3. Staff is in a learning mode and will be using more screens to process the information.

5. Why are office visits taking longer?

Visits are taking longer while staff becomes more familiar with the new system.
